I have taught biology, earth science, and physical science to 7th through 10th graders for the past 10 years. I have done so in a variety of teaching assignments--from enrichment programs for first generation college-bound students, to urban school environments, to rural school environments. Due to my diversity of experience, I have had the opportunity to work with gifted and talented students, students labeled "at-risk", English Language Learners, and students with special needs. In each of these settings, I taught my students in a fully inclusive, inquiry-based, hands-on science classroom.
I realize that science is about discovery. I strive to incorporate hands-on, inquiry-based activities into all my lessons. I also know that all students have diverse needs and preferences. I work hard to include various learning styles into my lessons to appeal to a variety of learners. I encourage students to ask meaningful questions and support them as they discover ways to answer those questions through the scientific process.
