Seventeen years as a public school ELA classroom teacher. I've taught 9th, 10th, and 11th grade English, all levels, including Honors and AP, college prep, basic English, and multiple remedial reading and intervention labs. I also worked four years as a literacy coach, guiding other teachers in incorporating reading and writing skills in a variety of disciplines, as well as assisting them in creating and delivering curriculum. For three years, I was a teacher consultant with the Instructional Leadership Corps, in conjunction with the California Teachers Association. My role there was to develop and deliver professional development for teachers throughout the state.
I emphasize higher-level critical thinking skills and development of analysis. Busy work, or drill and kill, is not my style. I like to incorporate humor and pop culture into lessons, as well as dynamic real world examples. My students are given the opportunity to write in a wide variety of styles, focusing on voice, purpose, depth, and development. There is also a strong emphasis on collaboration and creativity in my classroom. I like to get my kids up and moving as much as possible. What's wrong with the material being engaging and fun? We work hard, but we also laugh a lot.
Shasta Celebrates Teachers, 2019 Honoree. I was one of thirty teachers chosen from twenty five school districts for a months-long exhibit at Redding City Hall in Redding CA.
