“Success is not about where you come from, or how much money your family has. Success is about how passionately you believe in your own potential, and more importantly, how hard you’re willing to work to achieve it.” – Michelle Obama

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Robby May, a Nationally Board Certified social studies facilitator of learning experiences at Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, Maryland teaches AP US Government & Politics, AP Modern World History, AP US History, Historical Research Methods I/II, and WWII & Holocaust Studies. He works to open the eyes and hearts of his students in rural Appalachia to the peoples around the world, who share more commonalities than differences with them. He is most passionate about bringing the stories of those who are often ignored to the forefront in his classes, such as the LGBTQ+ community, Native Americans, minorities, woman and other historically marginalized groups. As a facilitator of learning experiences he is fervently dedicated to fighting for social justice and being a co-learner with his students in order to help them become change-agents in the world. In addition, Robby serves as a volunteer paramedic and EMS Captain with the Corriganville Volunteer Fire Company. He is Vice-Chair of the Allegany County Emergency Services Board and serves as an EMS and Instructor Trainer for the University of Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute, primarily teaching pre-hospital emergency medicine. His passion for education is seen in his over 12 years of teaching experience in public, private, and public charter schools as well as serving as an Adjunct Lecturer in the College of Education at Frostburg State University. He also serves as the Content Manager for the Humanities for Fiveable, a team that creates engaging content through interactive live streams, fun review games, and clear study guides to help students and teachers master complex concepts and skills in a variety of Advanced Placement courses. Robby holds a certificate in Paramedicine from Hagerstown Community College, Bachelors of Science degree in Social Science Secondary Education from Frostburg State University and a Masters of Science degree in Curriculum & Instruction from Drexel University. He is currently Ed.D. candidate at Frostburg State University studying Curricular and Instructional Leadership. The focus of his dissertation is around the impact that a high school social justice education has on students, 5+ years out of high school, using a case study model at a KIPP charter school, a public school, and a private school. He is a lifetime Boy Scout and Eagle Scout. Among other things, he has experience working in the government as an intern for Governor Ehrlich of Maryland, paging in the Maryland General Assembly, and at the White House for President Obama.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I "teach like my hair is on fire!" I LOVE teaching social studies and I strive to differentiate instruction to teach to multiple learning styles. I love incorporating media, plays, simulations, hands-on, projects, and all different things into my teaching. It is my goal to make social studies come alive as well as be applicable to my students.
