I proudly have 21 years of teaching experience at the elementary level. I have taught fourth grade for the first eight years of my career, and then moved for two years to a reading coach position under the Reading First grant. Having missed having my own classroom, I returned to my passion and started to teach first grade (for five years). Now I teach in an innovation school in a first and second grade classroom. Also, I have taught and continue to teach undergraduate and graduate programs at Salem State University. There, I work in the elementary education and literacy departments and teach courses on early literacy, children's literature and elementary education. I also enjoy supervising student teachers.
Three words that describe my teaching style include: visual, student-centered and systematic. I feel children learn best by being active in their learning via deduction, discovery and goal setting. Making connections and thematic teaching are key for young learners. Students in my classroom "do" and never take a "back seat" to the learning process. I think visuals are essential for students. They provide the tools needed to remember concepts taught. I make learning fun for both me AND my students!
