TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I proudly have 21 years of teaching experience at the elementary level. I have taught fourth grade for the first eight years of my career, and then moved for two years to a reading coach position under the Reading First grant. Having missed having my own classroom, I returned to my passion and started to teach first grade (for five years). Now I teach in an innovation school in a first and second grade classroom. Also, I have taught and continue to teach undergraduate and graduate programs at Salem State University. There, I work in the elementary education and literacy departments and teach courses on early literacy, children's literature and elementary education. I also enjoy supervising student teachers.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Three words that describe my teaching style include: visual, student-centered and systematic. I feel children learn best by being active in their learning via deduction, discovery and goal setting. Making connections and thematic teaching are key for young learners. Students in my classroom "do" and never take a "back seat" to the learning process. I think visuals are essential for students. They provide the tools needed to remember concepts taught. I make learning fun for both me AND my students!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

•Massachusetts: Governor's Outstanding Educator Award •Salem State University: Phi Kappa Phi Tradition of Excellence Award •Boston College: School of Education Donovan Scholar Award •Massachusetts: Paul Douglas Teaching Scholar Award •Harvard University: Phi Delta Kappa Future Teacher’s Award

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

My undergraduate education includes a BA from Boston College with a double major in both elementary education and human developmental psychology. My graduate education includes a M.Ed. in literacy from Salem State University. I am licensed as an elementary teacher grades 1-6 and as a reading specialist--all levels. In addition, I have taken and facilitated courses for Scholastic, Inc. RED, and have taken LETRS training developed by Dr. Louisa Moats.
