I currently teach at a private non-profit center for children on the autism spectrum as a preschool teacher. For the time being, I have up to nine kids in my morning class and six in my afternoon class with three AMAZING educational assistants that help keep me sane. I also work with amazing teams of professionals ranging from behaviour consultants, speech and language pathologists and occupational therapists. Through these teams, I have learned to become a mini jack-of-all-trades problem solving issues such as engagement to self-injurious behaviours to potty training the diaper bound.By an accidental chain of events, I have also recently began privately advocating and counselling youth and adults with special needs to find paid and volunteer positions in the community, making the most of their untapped skills and abilities (feel free to email me if you know someone in need of support with this). Prior to working at the Edmonton based Centre, I worked as a Learning Assistance Center teacher in a small rural school north of Stony Plain, with students in grades 2-7 needing extra support with a focus on life skills training. This position followed working for 5 years while in university as an In-Home Therapist coaching parents, whose children had recently been diagnosed on the spectrum, how to implement strategies suggested by the slough of consultants assigned to their family. In between, I worked for a non-profit organization counselling at risk youth at several Junior high schools on several Native Reserves surrounding the Spruce Grove area. I fell in love this type of work leading me to apply this past month for my masters in Counselling Psychology which I will hopefully be starting may 2016.
