I spent two wonderful years teaching 6th grade English/Language Arts at a rural Intermediate school in Texas before deciding to stay home with my daughter. Prior to that, I taught 6th grade Social Studies for one year at the same school. My student teaching was spent at an urban school in Kindergarten. I also did a pre-internship in a 4th grade classroom.
My teaching style tends to lean toward the Demonstrator style. When I taught ELA, my units were centered around a novel and a writing style (e.g. We read the novel "Crash" and worked on personal narratives). I generally like to follow the "I Do-We Do-You Do" method, often utilizing PowerPoint presentations or discussion questions over our current novel. I cannot stress enough the importance of MODELING for one's students! SHOW them what you expect instead of just telling them. That eliminates at least 50% of the questions they have.
