I have been a practicing artist for 23 years and decided to move into teaching in 2017. Since then, I’ve taught art to all grades, from elementary to year 12—as well as to adults. I’m now a middle school teacher in Victoria, Australia where I specialize in teaching Art, Media Studies, Humanities, Visual Communication, Ceramics and Animation.
My strength as a teacher has always been in differentiation. I prefer an individualized approach that takes individual students’ personal interests into account and, in this way, promotes engagement. I’m known for my ability to help motivate learners who have formerly had no interest in art by developing fun, alternative activities that provide a positive experience of art-making while fulfilling curriculum standards.
Other than seeing individual students excel in my classroom, my most shining teacher moments are when I’ve been involved in curating and judging for various youth initiatives in my region. Here are some I’ve been involved with in recent years: 2017-2019: Judge for the Digital Media category of the RAW Arts Awards. This award fosters the artistic pursuits of young people in my region. Being invited to judge was especially meaningful to me as I was a first prize recipient in the Visual Arts category back in… 2017-2019: Curator for the State Secondary Colleges Combined Student Art Show. This exhibition showcases students’ work from all the middle schools in my region completed over the year. 2019: Judge for the NETschool Art Exhibition. NETschool is a highly personalized alternative educational setting for young people aged 15-19 who are unable to attend mainstream schooling but have a strong desire to gain formal qualifications. In 2019 the theme for the art students participating in this program was ‘Space’.
I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts at LaTrobe University in Bendigo in 2013. I then returned to LaTrobe to attain my Masters of Education in 2015.
Because I’m interested in a wide range of art styles and mediums, I have broad and diverse experience as an artist. I have worked professionally in drawing, printmaking, painting, film, animation and video game creation. You can check out my artist profile here. NetSpaceArts.com is my latest creative project: a forum that offers quality art resources to teachers and homeschool educators. Through NetSpaceArts, I also run art lessons via online video conference, that are catered to individual learners. You can find my website here, or check out my free video resources on the NetSpaceArts Youtube channel. Thanks for reading!
