Certified Public Library and School Library Media Specialist with over 25 years experience. 15+ years as a library teacher working with underserved populations.
Libraries are magical! They are one of the rare places in our world where kids (and grown-ups!) can take the time to discover where their true interests and talents are. When kids can connect what we teach to their real-life experiences and interests, then intrinsic learning will happen. As a library-teacher, a primary focus has been to develop a deep understanding of standards across the curriculum and to be able to directly connect those standards to the learning experience. Community partnerships and outreach within the school community help enrich our connection to standards. I believe these partnerships are also essential ingredients in helping our students to find their place in the world. Collaboration is key, especially when done with a thorough knowledge of the standards - and a creative streak for instructional design! But! Forget all that! Truly - my number one priority as a teacher is this: "Reading independently is the most important thing a child can do to ensure their success, both academically and in life." 'nuf said :)
