TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've been teaching for 11 years. Most recently, I've spent the last five years teaching high school English, particularly English 1301-1302/12th Grade Dual Credit and AP Literature and Composition with sections of 11th and 12th grade English as well. I have worked during several of these years as a Writing Center Interventionist conducting small group student pull outs for STAAR, EOC, and high needs 9th/10th graders. My first six years were spent teaching English/Language Arts/Reading (ELAR) in a Title I Middle School, where I also spent two years as the Instructional Coach/Literacy Specialist. In the past, I have taught adult ESL classes at the local junior college. I am currently also an adjunct instructor for the fall/spring freshman composition sequence that I teach as a dual credit course to 12th grade students at my high school.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I love to find interesting materials in a variety of subject areas and disciplines to underscore the idea that critical reading and writing are valuable skills everywhere! I create unexpected pairings and extension activities that allow students to form big-picture connections and develop their curiosity, interests, and analytical skills. In class, I strive for a balance of individual, group, and whole class instruction and emphasize the processes of reading and writing through specific, detailed portfolio keeping and process reflection. My classroom learning environment is covered in text and features something to read or a cue for thinking in every corner-- and, of course, exemplary student work!
