This is a mini-lesson that gives a basic description of the biography writing genre. It also gives students an opportunity to divide into groups for a quick discussion. Probably 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how much you allow for group discussion.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I realized my passion and abilities in teaching when I was 16 years old, teaching dance. So, I decided to become a school teacher. For three years I taught language arts in public schools. I also taught dance and choreography after school at a studio and for surrounding public schools. Then, I decided to go to law school, but I couldn't shake the teaching urge. I taught at an after-school program for reluctant learners. Even now, as a licensed attorney, I continue to tutor high school and college students, and teach small creative writing and college preparation classes.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I tend to use hands-on, kinesthetic methods, as I have found that it encourages students to be more interested. I also like to tune in on students' creativity--this too I've found helps spark their interests. Students love to talk about and reflect on themselves. I often create lessons that ask students to do this, which I've found extremely successful in reluctant learners.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I never thought I'd be that teacher who makes freshmen students fall in love with Shakespeare. I also never thought college students would come back to thank me for teaching them how to ace their college essays. Teaching can be hard at times, but these moments and rewards are what keep me going. Plus, it's fun. ;)
