I am going into my 7th year teaching this year! I have taught 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English as well as Creative Writing, Mississippi Writers, Technical and Workplace Writing, Debate, Business English, ACT Prep, and SREB English. In addition to teaching, I am also a Varsity Cheerleading Coach, and I am going into my 6th year coaching.
I would say that my teaching style is a combination of things! I love to dive into literature with my students and teach them how to be critical readers, but any of my students will tell you that I only choose high interest pieces of literature, but even if it isn't the most high interest, I pretend that it is, and they love it. I also love to be creative. I make a lot of my summative assessments into creative projects that tend to show me more about what my students know then a test ever could. I love to be silly and celebrate all of the holidays! Shakespeare's birthday, we are having a celebration, Valentines Day we are making Hamlet themed Valentines, Halloween we are studying and writing our own Urban Legends. Basically, I think school should be F U N! Even though I teach 11-12 graders now, they are still kids who want to be kids and enjoy their time together, and if I can make them love English by being silly and relatable, then that is what I will always do!
In my 6 years teaching I have received the following awards: - Rookie of the Year for the District - The Innovation Award - The Tech Wiz Award - Coolest Classroom Award - Teacher of the Week
I attended Mississippi State University where I got my undergraduate degree in Secondary Education with endorsements in English, Music, and Theatre. From there I taught in Louisiana for 1 year, and then Mississippi for the past 5 years, and I am so excited to begin year 7! This past spring I completed my masters in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State, and I am looking forward to starting my national boards!
My goal in life is to love my students, show them how to love literature, and teach them how to be kind humans along the way :)
