For six years, I taught both Language Arts and Social Studies to 6th and 7th grade students at Milton Middle School in Milton, WV. Prior to my placement at Milton, I taught basic writing courses for Marshall University and Ashland Community and Technical College. These days, I work with students on research projects at a large high school in Tennessee.
I would describe my teaching style as "21st century facilitator." As a true facilitator, I believe students should be responsible for their own learning and be more independent. I strive to allow my students to reach these goals by designing dynamic lessons, heavy on technology, with real world applicability. When I design my lessons, I stress this real world aspect, because I believe students must understand the basic purpose of a lesson before they will consider the message behind it. "Why do we need to learn this?" and "How will this help us in the future?" are two questions I always try to address in the planning stages. Designing relevant lessons makes for powerful learning. Also, as a facilitator, I emphasize group projects with peer-to-peer tutoring and learning groups. Activities are a big part of my curriculum, and I try to vary the instruction often to allow creativity.
I was a "Teacher of the Year" Nominee for the 2008-2009 school year in my district. That same year, I was awarded "November's Teacher of the Month" in our local newspaper, The Herald Dispatch.
I earned a B.A. in Secondary Education and an M.A. in English from Marshall University in Huntington, WV. I graduated with high honors both times. I also hold an M.S. in Information Science from the University of Tennessee.
I love reading, writing, researching, and Cincinnati Reds baseball.
