ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I have been a speech-language pathologist for over 10 years now and have had to opportunity to experience a variety of pediatric treatment settings, but have found my calling in the public schools. For the first 8 years, I spent countless hours pushing into pre-k classrooms and was exposed to a very wide range of abilities. Most of these classrooms consisted of a mixture of children with special needs ranging from speech/language only to one or a combination of the following: Down’s Syndrome, Physical Impairment, ASD, Developmentally Delayed and EBD. Almost every lesson presented to the children began with literacy. I found myself making over 80% of the materials I used to supplement the book I was using. I was always faced with a group of children with a wide range of varying abilities. Some working on basic concepts, others vocabulary development and others I was trying to increase their utterance length. Some children were nonverbal or had significant physical impairments while others had typical language development with articulation needs. I needed activities that could be tailored to meet each of their needs. I found myself making most materials for the children with significant language and developmental delays. I needed simple, basic tasks that incorporated multiple repetitions. I wanted each child to be successful in completing his/her work. In the last couple years I have been working with K-5 speech and language students. I love making my own materials! I hope to continue to add to my K-5 materials as well as create and recreate activities for the pre-k population with speech, language and developmental delays of all abilities.
