I've been teaching 8th grade ELA in an urban public school for 17 plus years. I've also taught US History to 8th graders for several of those years.
My style is that of incorporating balance literacy in my instruction. Cross curricular study and writing are incorporated on a daily basis. My lessons are Standards driven and my students are held accountable for just about all activities we complete in class. I try to meet students where they are and provide supports to help them increase their skills. In order to do this I try to differentiate my teaching to include things from modeling to group work to small group instruction. In an effort to reach each learner I try to differentiate the assessments/activities I assign to help each student see that, even if they struggle with something like writing a five paragraph analysis essay, they can excel at writing an analytical poem.
