Engaging, fun and empowering. I like to focus on practical outcomes and independent application as I believe relevance keeps students engaged and drawing their own conclusions gives them a sense of achievement and confidence. I try to engage the audio, visual and kinesthetic or tactile modes of learning within everything I design. That's probably my psychology background influencing what I do. I think it gave me a better appreciation of just how diverse the range of strengths we bring can be.
I still have all the student feedback cards I ever received because the most important thing is that our clients are happy. I hope in some small way I was a positive influence in their life. I once taught drawing to a gentleman in his 80s who cried and told me he had waited his whole life for someone to explain it all to him. That was pretty special. I'm also proud of finding the thing(s) that each of my students does really well. Other than that, most of my awards have been for art or children's book writing and illustration. I have had the privilege of teaching in a number of countries in order to gain a more global viewpoint.
A long and meandering path from a Science degree in biology and psychology, through fine arts, TESOL, ESL, literacy, graphic design, digital media and illustration. And a dash of Spanglish, Franglish and Italish along the way as an adult learner.
These days, I am an illustrator and graphic designer as well as an art teacher. I work in all styles between children's book illustration, cartoons and scientific illustration. I have experience in children's book writing and illustration as well as writing and developing educational resources for teachers, students and community groups both privately and in universities. I also teach Primary Ethics and have just been asked to create learning resources for gifted and talented students. This should all keep me busy while I raise my own beautiful children.
