I currently teach English/Language Arts & AP English Language & Composition at a magnet school in South Florida - Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy. As a middle/high school with grades 6-12, I've taught & used these lessons for students from 6th to 12th. Previous to this post, I taught ELA to gifted middle school students for 15 years. Prior to that, I taught at a private elementary school, as a substitute at all subjects and grades, and spent one year abroad teaching E.S.O.L. in Guangzhou, China.
I'd characterize my teaching style as taking on an interactive approach to teaching literature and language arts skills. My class involves many projects, presentations, discussions, and literary as well as life lessons.
I was nominated and elected as Teacher of the Year for my school in 2004-2005. That year, I was also selected as a Region Finalist for Teacher of the Year in Miami-Dade, FL (the 4th largest school district in the US). I achieved National Board Professional Teaching Certification in 2007 for Early Adolescent Language Arts. My students have achieved numerous local and state awards for their writing.
B.A. in English from Florida International University in 1994. M.S. in Educational Technology from Barry University in 2000. Gifted Certification in 2005. NBPTS Certification in 2007.
Married to my school's Media Specialist, Albina Cruz. We have two kids of our own, beyond the hundreds we have taught.
