When I was an 8th grade math teacher, I thought that 8th grade was the most important math year for students. But several years ago when became a K-8 Math Coach, my thinking changed. After a few years of coaching, I changed my mind to 4th grade being the most important year..................... And then a few years later, having had the opportunity to really understand the challenges of teachers and students in teaching math across the K-8 grades, I came to the conclusion that the most critical grade of teaching and learning math is in 1st grade............... What I was observing was that when students left 1st grade not understanding the math concepts of their grade, for the most part, they struggled in math in subsequent years and then over the years, they never caught up with their peers.
I made a first grade math video series to help parents and the support team, both inside and outside of school, to really understand the math concepts of first grade. When parents and the support team are confident in what the first graders should be learning and when they feel comfortable in how they can help them, they then are able to be confident in working with their first grader......................... You as the primary teacher of your students, can then be properly supported by parents and others in helping for your first graders to succeed in first grade math! ........................... There is no grade more important in teaching and learning math............................................First Grade is THE most important grade!!
