TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Hi there! My name is Amber. I'm a National Board Certified Teacher and an Instructional Coach. I have been in education for 13 years. I've taught grades 2-5. As an instructional coach, I've modeled lessons in grades K-6. I spent a year as a TOSA, which gave me great perspective. But being in the classroom with children is where my heart is. Most of my experience has been in diverse Title 1 settings. I believe in great education for ALL children. I have ample training in Common Core Math instruction. I am also trained in facilitating professional development courses for Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI). Likewise, I have several years of training in balanced literacy and Teachers College Units of Study at Columbia University. I've worked with staff developers at Columbia University in New York and locally as well. As a TOSA I was trained in Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and collaborated with local scientists to provide professional development for teachers.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I have a constructivist style of teaching. Learning is about building enduring understandings. Children build critical thinking skills through inquiry and discovery. In today's digital world, we all have a wealth of information at our fingertips. But, I believe that it's what we do with that information that really matters. Because we have more access to knowledge than ever before in history, education needs to adjust with society. The role of the teacher is now about developing critical thinkers and problem solvers. This is what our world needs. The children of today are more than future job seekers. They are future world-changers. Teachers are so much more than keepers of information. We don't just give our students information and knowledge, we teach them how to process that information and knowledge. We teach them how to be safe and discerning. We teach them to be good stewards of the earth. Most importantly, we teach them to be kind.
