TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have had experience teaching K-12 through student teaching, full time teaching, after school enrichment, and volunteer work. I received my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Photography and film and a second Bachelors of Fine Arts in Communication Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University. I then went on to receive my Masters of Art Education at the Maine College of Art. Since college I have taught art at the high school level for 4 years. I have taught Introduction to Art, Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Graphic Design, Photography, and Film Studies. I'm incredibly lucky to be able to say I love what I do for a living.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I can offer a range of skills in the classroom. I'm able to cross disciplines in art through media with my previous knowledge in both analogue and digital photography and Graphic Design; but also provide instruction in the fine arts (oil painting, printmaking, pen and ink, watercolor, and even digital drawing). I also can bring forward effective tools in cultivating the ideation process. I foster a productive and respectful learning environment that provides each student the opportunity to experiment and grow in their own artistic process. Art has been a lifetime passion of mine so having the opportunity to facilitate and grow the appreciation and love for the arts in the next generation is an exciting venture. In my classroom you will very rarely see me lecturing, unless I am introducing a project. Before every project I include a slideshow with artists examples from art history and contemporary examples working today. Each beginning of the project also has an outline that has all the information about their assignment for students to go back to if need be. Introduction day for an assignment is one of the few times that I am talking in front of the class, while my students take notes. After introducing a project via PowerPoint, I often complete a demonstration of the techniques needed for the project. Demonstrations may continue throughout the project depending on what they are working on. After "introduction day" my students are free to work at their own pace. I float the room and help them one on one. After projects are completed, I often have my students participate in individual and group critiques of their work.
