I have taught 5th grade in Georgia for the past several years. Prior to that I spent a year traveling in 8 different African countries. My first two years teaching were spent teaching middle school social studies in a remote eskimo village in rural Alaska. My two student teaching experiences were very different. My first student teaching was in an inner city middle school and my second student teaching was at a private school on the Pacific Island of Saipan.
I believe that students need to be engaged in the learning process and what they learn needs to be relevant to their lives. If they are engaged then they want to learn and that is 80 percent of the battle. If it is relevant then they will see the importance of what they are learning and want to be engaged.
Selected to be part of the GACE standard setting committee for Georgia's new Early Childhood Education teacher certification test in 2013. Was selected to be on the standard setting committee for the GACE Curriculum and Instruction Test in 2014. Georgia's Superintendent of Education, Richard Woods, toured a museum exhibit put together by one of my classes when he visited my school in 2015.
