TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been a teacher for over 15 years and I still feel as if my capacity to teach, and subsequently to learn, is never-ending. I am a lifelong learner at heart and I believe that every aspect of life can and should be viewed as a learning experience. In 2008, I completed a Masters in Education (M.Ed.) in International Education with dual accreditation in both International Elementary Education and English as a Second/Foreign Language (ESL/EFL). This Masters program also provided the educational foundation to become a certified International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) teacher (Level I). A few years later, I also became certified as an early childhood teacher. I have taught a variety of grade levels both in the US and abroad ranging from early childhood through 5th grade, including mixed-age/grade classes spanning up to three years difference. I have worked at two International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) schools, a public school, two international schools, as an adult educator, and an unschool/homeschool facilitator for my children. I have fused my passion for education with a love nature and an ethical, scientific design methodology called permaculture. As a result, in 2014, I founded PERMIE KIDs, a community of educators, parents, and children working together to empowering children to take a solutions-based, active approach in life by learning to care for themselves, others, and the Earth. For more information, additional resources, and to collaborate with this community, visit www.permiekids.com.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I ascribe to a personal, passion-driven, inquiry-based, lifelong learning philosophy, intertwined with modern, progressive unschooling principles that integrates learning of concepts, knowledge, and skills throughout everyday life experiences, nature, and meaningful self-reflection. I trust that with thoughtful, differentiated instruction, guidance, and modeling, children will develop the skills, knowledge, and personal characteristics necessary to then become responsible, self-reliant, and driven lifelong learners. As empowered lifelong learners, children will eagerly follow their passions, be reflective, take responsibility for their choices and actions, become active, valued members of their communities, support liberty, seek out new experiences, and drive knowledge, love, and peace forward in their own lives and ultimately for all of mankind.
