Heidi Swaney

I have taught first grade for six years in Knoxville, Tennessee. I have also been working under an Arts Integrated Model for the past five years. We integrate the arts into our teaching of the standards wherever there are natural connections. According to our school’s test scores—this seems to work!

I love working with young children. I always try to be firm and kind, consistent and clear with expectations, and excited! First grade is so much fun! With our school's art integration piece, I use visual art, drama, dance, music, and creative writing to teach the core academic subjects. It is amazing how much meaning is brought into lessons with the arts.

In 2008 I won the Distinguished Teacher Award for integrating the arts into my classroom.

I studied to be a reading specialist and earned my Ed.S. from Tennessee Technological University. I earned my B.S. and M.A. from Johnson Bible College.
