TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I liked teaching in small rural schools. It did mean handling lots of subjects. Over the years I've had 7th grade math, several levels of general science, two levels of biology, basic inorganic chemistry, anatomy/physiology, earth science, and physics. Now I write under the pen name Karen GoatKeeper.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Basic information and background may be in a text, but science is in the lab. A normal lesson unit began with reading the text to get students up on ideas and vocabulary. The class then moved into the lab to explore the concepts and see what the text was talking about.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

My Batchelor's is in zoology from the University of California, Los Angeles. I completed education courses after moving to Arkansas at the College, now University, of the Ozarks in Clarksville, AR. Over the years I've taken numerous courses from the Missouri Department of Conservation and through Drury College for my Missouri certificates.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am now supposed to be retired. Retirement is boring. For almost 50 years I've raised Nubian dairy goats. I live in the Missouri Ozarks with my goats, chickens, cats, companion and garden. This gives me ideas for books I write. When I finished the first one, I chose a pen name, Karen GoatKeeper, for its uniqueness and suitability. As the number of books increased and I added some serious botany books by a friend, I changed from basing my website on my pen name to GoatKeepers Press. My books include two science books and another on chemistry is partially done. All are science activity books. These are aimed for middle grades and the investigations are set up for doing at home. The teaching units are based on these books.
