I have taught for 12 years. The first 10 were in separate day schools and residential facilities for children with severe/profound diagnoses such as Autism and Down's Syndrome. I took several years off and recently started teaching again. I teach middle school remediation and special education with an emphasis on character education. I also teach Dual Enrollment business classes to Juniors and Seniors.
I am lucky because I teach special education. I am able to change and adapt my curriculum to fit the kids. I actually let my kids vote on our next topics. I let them learn things not covered by the state. In the end, I work to teach them that education is not evil, that they can learn, and hopefully, I impart that they are smarter than they give themselves credit for.
