As the sciences of the brain are developing a more profound understanding of the learning process, it is essential for educators to join in the conversation so that a comprehensive picture of learning can be developed. Each field of study, cognitive science, biology, and education is hungry for the potential promise of collaboration between the three. As a principal for 16 years, I wrote grants from 2007 - 2011 to create and sustain a charter school based on neuroscience, and Kurt Fischer’s MBE model of connecting the Mind (cognitive science), Brain (biology) with Education. This enabled us to learn and use evidence based practices from both biology, and cognitive science to create classrooms and a school community where students were more self-regulated. As a result, we achieved statistically significant results measured by Dr. Berttram Chiang from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. More importantly, students gained an understanding of their significance in their classroom and school community. They also learned specific thinking skills that made the acquisition of content quicker and more meaningful. In my new position as Superintendent of Schools, I hope to bring the MBE model to practitioners at all grade levels, affecting an entire school district. More importantly, I desire to develop a network of teachers with the knowledge and skills to build a nation of critical thinkers. This will be evidenced in the application of strategies, structures and tools based on neuroscience to • Build classrooms communities that foster connection, collaboration and individualization • Explicitly teach thinking skills found in the process standards of the Common Core State Standards • Promote student self-regulation • Teach students how their brain works so they may mediate themselves and others The measurement and evidence of learning now more than ever is focused on the individual growth of each child to enable students in America to be globally competitive. To provide optimal instruction, educators must be equipped to purposefully shape the whole child, targeting academic, social/emotional and cognitive development.
