In pursuit of my M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling, I have worked as a counseling intern at a private school with children grades Pre-K-8th Grade. Before my journey towards becoming a counselor, I contemplated becoming a teacher (before eventually deciding that counseling was my intended path) and so a portion of my B.A. in Psychology was spent in teaching/education courses. Additionally, before my journey into completing higher education for myself, I was a member of the United States Air Force where I had many opportunities to engage in alternative forms of instruction, particularly in volunteer work engaging with students in JROTC classes/programs. Beyond this, I have the experience of having been a student and currently being a student enrolled in a master's program for which I am truly excited to be finishing May of 2023!
In my experience of working with kids, I have found it invaluable to lean into letting them lead the way. So often as adults, we come to believe that we know best which often leaves kids feeling a lack of agency and autonomy in their lives. I believe that whenever possible and safe, allowing kids to follow their own logic can help them learn in a more exploratory way. When mistakes happen, I am there as a support to help them in thinking through what they might want to do next time when faced with similar challenges. I believe a great deal of learning comes through trial and error and I hope that I offer a presence for students where mistakes are not only acceptable, but expected and seen as opportunities for learning and growth. When kids come to visit me for support, my ethos is that they already have the tools necessary within them to learn, grow, and thrive, and when I trust in them, they have the power to surprise me with their level of understanding and introspection. I believe that by helping children reflect upon their experiences and feelings in a way that is self-lead and affirmed, they can come to trust their gut and develop a sense of greater inner capability. I believe in a child's ability to grow in intentionality with regard to their path, choices, and their ability to follow their inner compass with a sense of confidence and empowerment.
