TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've been teaching for over 5 years now, and have taught: 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade ELA (including special ed. focused classes), AP Literature, AP Psychology, and various elective courses in Journalism, Fantasy Lit and Writing, Food Lit and Writing, and LGBTQ-focused Sex Education. I have also taught test prep classes for the SAT, helped run an after school peer-tutoring service, taught English language classes to young adults in China, and I also have experience advising high school Gay-Straight Alliances and Newspaper clubs.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I consider a class successful when my students have talked for 95% of the class and I've talked for 5%. I think a strong English class involves as much discussion of the text as possible while focusing on the literary elements and what makes the book interesting. I value critical and creative thinking, and I push the value of analysis in writing. My classes, my lessons, my projects are all designed to challenge the students to produce strong, quality work that takes some thinking and some creativity. I lead through the passion I have for my subjects and the care I have for my students.
