I worked for 8 years in special education before taking a break to homeschool my children. During the next decade and a half I helped to found and run a large regional homeschool support group, running programming from cooperative learning classes, to our monthly Book Club and annual Art Days. As my nest empties, I fill my time with eclectic endeavors. I might use an Ortan Gillingham based intervention with a student in the morning and tutor middle school math with another in the afternoon. Some days I'll teach a class or invite a group over to explore in my art room. In the evening i might read over a story or essay someone sent me to review and give comments. I also serve as a homeschool evaluator and advisor.
I'm a big believer in child led constructivism. I think differentiation is essential. I spend a lot of time telling parents of young children that their number one academic goal is to not make kids hate learning. Engaging, creative play and real world, meaningful learning is ideal. If you want to know more about my thoughts on teaching and learning, please follow my blog.
I don't really move in these circles, although a long time ago when i was teaching public school a group of my kids placed honorable mention in the Scholastic book writing challenge ... I tend to be more interested in kid accomplishments more than my own anyway.
I have a BS in Special Education and an MS in Educational Development. I am certified to teach ages PreK-6th grade all subjects, 7-8th grade English, Math and Social Studies and high school English and Social Studies. I am also eligible for Library/Media Science certification.
