I have been teaching music for 16 years at charter schools in Denver, CO serving low-income communities with a population of 80% or more students who are classified as ELL (English Language Learners). I've worked hard at making music class more ELL-friendly. While getting my Master's as a music teacher I never heard much about how to teach to English language learners. With the help of graduate classes at the University of Colorado I began developing ELL-friendly materials. I am Orff certified and active in the Rocky Mountain Chapter of AOSA

I emphasize mastery of all musical skills and a breadth of all elements of music. My students understand why music is an essential subject to know and believe that they can find their individual strength in music with an open mindset and perseverance My style is a hybrid of different music methods from Kodaly, Orff, and my own personal experiences in traditional orchestra and band settings. I work to keep music fun but also keep the bar high on what my students are expected to accomplish in a school year My students know coming into my class what is expected for their hard work and behavior, the result, successful learning, and lots of fun!
