The "Flash Scene" is a great activity to "bridge the gap" between units, or just to get students up on their feet and having fun! The idea is that a scene can be read, rehearsed, and performed within one class period. We spend a lot of time in

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

My theatre teaching journey began in 1999 when I started a theatre company with five friends from college. Company One Theatre (www.companyone.org) is now an award-winning, nationally recognized company, roundly praised for its artistic risk taking and its commitment to diversity among its artists, audiences, and leadership. From the beginning, education has been a big part of Company One's mission and I spent 10 years as a theatre educator, teaching grades K-12 through in-school and summer programming. After a decade of working non-profit jobs in order to support my life in the theatre, I honed in on education as my passion and focused on building my career. I returned to grad school in 2010 for my M.F.A. in Theatre Education at Boston University. After grad school, I taught in Boston Public Schools for two years before moving to City on a Hill Charter School to create and implement that school's theatre program. In this position, I taught over 100 high school freshmen every day, 100% of whom are from poor / disadvantaged families. This was a mandatory theatre class where many of the students were not experienced or interested in theatre...so I really earned my stripes! It was while at City on a Hill that I signed up for TPT, hoping to share what works in my classroom with other teachers in need of solid theatre curriculum. I am now teaching 9th-12th graders at Boston Arts Academy, Boston's only public arts high school. At BAA, I continue to experiment with building captivating, engaging curricula to share through TPT.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I set high expectations for my students and try to deliver lessons with a focused and energized vibe. While most of my classes have over 20 students, I do best when I'm working with students 1:1 or in small groups, so I try to incorporate this as much as possible into my teaching. My teaching thrives on the personal connections I make with students. Working off of a solid base of trust and mutual respect, I seek to provide inspiration, motivation, and support to a wide array of learners.
