Dyson's Space Activites

I was one of the first female flight controllers for NASA, working as a Flight Activities Officer in Mission Control during the early Space Shuttle Program. I left NASA to raise my children & became a full-time writer about space for adults & kids. I have taught Astronomy and Science Fiction writing courses in CCISD's WAVE (GT) program with students grades 6-8. Also tutored writing (short story and profile writing) at St. Thomas the Apostle private school, grade 5. Have done numerous author visits to schools and libraries all over the United States, as well as student and teacher STEM workshops at schools and through museums.

SCBWI Golden Kite Award for Best nonfiction book of 1999 (for Space Station Science, published by Scholastic). American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award in the Children's Category, 2004 (for Home on the Moon, published by National Geographic). National Science Teachers Association Best STEM Book Award for Welcome to Mars (coauthored with Buzz Aldrin, National Geographic). Inducted into the Nevada Space Hall of Fame in 2018. Featured in International Women in Aviation and Space Museum (Cleveland, Ohio) Mission Control Exhibit.

Marianne Dyson was one of NASA's first female flight controllers, the subject of her Space Shuttle memoir, A Passion for Space. She's a speaker on space topics for adults and children, a technical editor, and science fiction writer. She is best known for her award-winning children’s books about space, including the NSTA Best STEM Book for Welcome to Mars, coauthored with Apollo 11’s Buzz Aldrin for National Geographic.
