With nearly 20 years of experience in teaching and coaching, I have many things to share with you. Here's a snip-it of my experience: I currently teach in Apparel, Housing, and Resource Management at Virginia Tech. I was the Director of Education and Programs at the regional jail in Charlottesville, Virginia. I supervised pre-service teachers during their student teaching internships at Bridgewater College. I taught family and consumer sciences in both middle and high schools. I owned an all-star competitive and performing cheerleading company. I coached both middle and high school cheerleading squads.
I once heard a remarkable quote from Marsha Tate, “When you go fishing, do you use bait that you like or do you use bait that the fish like?” Although content knowledge is necessary in effective instruction, it alone does not establish whether a teacher is able to teach in order for students to learn. Teaching, by far, is not a “one size fits all” craft. Harmonious with this paradigm is that all learners, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status, are capable of learning – perhaps not at the same time or even on the same day. Some work better in small groups while others are better left alone. Some prefer the analytical while others lean towards the intuitive.
