TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught English literature and composition at the college level for twenty-five years. I've also taught creative writing.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I liken my role to that of a good gardener. Just as the gardener can't force the plant to grow but can only create the conditions in which it can flourish and bloom, I can't force students to learn. All I can do is provide the right environment, keep the weeds of poor thinking skills from taking root, and then step back and be amazed at what ideas, imagination, and thoughtful results blossom and grow.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I haven't won any awards or received any honors, but I have had many shining moments, mostly when I see a lightbulb go off and a struggling student grasp a troublesome concept. Sometimes I run into former students who proudly tell me how well they've done in other classes because of what they learned in mine. I've watched students who assured me at the beginning of the course how much they hate English class blossom and become confident readers and writers.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have a Master's degree in English.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Besides teaching, I'm also a Master Gardener and a screenwriter with two scripts optioned so far. Please visit me on PINTEREST
