4+ years teaching English Language Arts at two Title I secondary schools in the state of Tennessee.
Teaching English Language Arts to middle school students in grades 6-8 presents unique challenges. This transitional period can be confusing and emotionally taxing for students, making it crucial to adopt a teaching style that addresses their needs effectively. In my classroom, I prioritize building strong relationships with my students as a foundation for learning. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, I aim to create a space where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and engaging in academic discussions. I believe in guiding and modeling ethical choices, recognizing the importance of character development during this critical stage of their lives. Through meaningful discussions and thought-provoking activities, I encourage students to think critically, develop empathy, and make responsible decisions. Engaging with cooperative style games and activities, I promote collaboration and teamwork among my students. By working together, they learn valuable interpersonal skills and develop a sense of community in the classroom. This approach not only enhances their learning experience but also cultivates a positive and inclusive classroom culture. To ensure academic success, I follow the science of reading approach, which emphasizes evidence-based strategies to improve literacy skills. By incorporating research-based methods into my instruction, I strive to help students become proficient readers and writers. I am dedicated to meeting standards while going beyond proficiency, allowing students to reach their full potential. Teaching in the middle is a formative period in a person's life, and I am committed to supporting my students through their journey. Join me as we navigate the challenges together, empowering students to become confident readers and writers, equipped with the skills they need to succeed.
