I have 15 joyful years of teaching under my belt (Pre-K to Grade 5) both in the United States and abroad.
My overall philosophy is that students should have a year's amount of growth in a year's amount of time no matter where their skill level or knowledge base is when they come to me. Differentiation, although extremely challenging, is the key to successful student learning in the classroom. I use workshop formats in reading, writing and math so as to promote small group instruction to meet kids where they are academically in each subject. I have a special place in my heart for ELL students, as I once was a learner of a new language in a new country. Songs, chants, poetry and visuals galore are what I have found to be successful in promoting language acquisition and a love for learning. I also believe in the power of connections and relationships; it's nearly impossible for a child to learn optimally in the classroom of a teacher whom he or she does not like. :)
