I have 25 years of teaching experience, including elementary and middle school special education, elementary education, and as a reading specialist. In my current position as a reading specialist, I teach daily in classrooms grades K-2, and provide intervention to struggling students grades K-5.
I rely heavily on teaching a very systematically developed sequence of skills for both phonology and comprehension, applied in isolation, with contrived text, and in authentic reading experiences. I strive for over-learning with my struggling students so they are able to apply learned skills with automaticity. My students spend a lot of time talking about their thinking in order to develop a conscious awareness of strategy use in reading.
