TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a seasoned urban public educator with 30+ years under my belt and have LOVED it! My primary teaching role has been in 1st-4th grades, with inclusion and ESL students. I also have taught kindergarten, 5th and 8th grades. In addition, I have written curriculum and planned professional development for my district. Also, I was a teacher consultant and teacher manual writer for a nationally recognized reading intervention program. In my free time I dabble in writing childrens’s books.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe early readers need explicit, systematic instruction. Aside from that, I am NOT an "open the book, read, and answer the questions at the end of the chapter" kind of teacher. (I hope nobody is in this day!) I feel most successful when I plan for hands-on, out-of-the-box thinking, and student-led projects. I enjoy teaching thematically, which is possible to do with Common Core.
