I've spent five lovely years teaching English and Theater to high school and middle school students. Courses taught: English I & II, RTI Reading, Theater Arts, Drama, 6th grade ELA, and Senior Capstone. I taught students who struggled with reading for a few years, so I became dedicated to using interactive read-alouds with high-quality texts. I needed simple resources (read: not elementary style simple which is insulting to high school students) to accompany the texts, which provided scaffolded questions to allow students to engage with the text more deeply. So much inspiration comes from Fisher & Frey, bless them.
I love watching high school students grow in their critical thinking skills while interacting with literature, or any text, and even more, I love being a part of the "discovery" process. Students flourish in classrooms where they feel known, heard, and safe. I strive every year to ensure my students feel connected to one another, and to me. In all of my classes, I value having students do most of the mental heavy-lifting. I shouldn't be the one doing most of the talking. I value the struggle, and my students know I will always support them through learning challenges. I view myself as a facilitator for student learning. I encourage curiosity, kindness, thoughtfulness, and perseverance. My entire goal is for my students to develop as people who think critically, read and write effectively, and interact thoughtfully with the world around them.
