I have been enhancing my Latin curriculum for several years to create a program which prepares students to begin translating simple texts from the first year of Latin. Most Latin curriculum leaves text translation for the intermediate and advanced students of Latin, focusing primarily on vocabulary building in the first two years of study. My goal has been to bring Latin to life in these early years and to give students the opportunity and challenge to see the puzzle pieces of Latin fit together, motivating them to read, write and understand the whole of this complex language. Students get excited at their accomplishment in translating and creating their own texts!
Creativity and group interaction. games, and memory work are the keys to success in my classes. Incorporating whole language activities with the rote learning of Latin paradigms makes the class exciting and fresh.
