I have been teaching for 10 years. I taught 2nd grade for 1 year and 4th grade for one year...but my heart belongs to 3rd grade! Beyond the professional teaching scope; I am the oldest of 7 children. This is where I discovered my love of teaching. I also worked as a Pre-K teacher through college. Now I am a mom to 3, who I teach daily!
My teaching style is very energetic and hands on. I am firm believer in respecting a child's attention span and working with that. I do a lot of moving and rotating in my class. I try to limit "lecture" type teaching to no more than 30 minutes per day, and in that time I stop and ask the students to interact with each other to keep them focused. I am inspired by Kagan Structures and the Whole Brain Teaching models. I am also very technology driven. I try to incorporate flip charts, power points, cameras, qr codes, iPads etc. any where I can! I teach the ELA (Reading, Writing, Language & Spelling) block this year so I spend a lot of time figuring out fun ways to make reading and writing (including their spelling and grammar) more rigorous and more engaging! Before this year I taught all subjects.
I have a Bachelors of Arts degree from Southeastern Louisiana University where I graduated on the President's List. I was 'Teacher of the Year' for my school in 2009 and I was chosen as the 'Elk's Young Educator of the Year' in 2010. I was recently selected by my administration to be the Teachers Liaison and Spokesperson for our PTA.
I grew up in a very large family that didn't exactly see the value in a girl getting an education. At 12 years old it was decided that I had completed enough school and I needed to stay home and help with my 6 younger siblings. I had some very dark times the next several years. The one thing helped me prevail against all odds was my love of reading. If I could get to the library I was the happiest girl in the world. Books were my escape. At 16 I began to study for the GED. By 17 I was enrolled in college. I first majored in Early Childhood Education because I thought I wanted to run a daycare...but I soon realized that I just wanted to teach! To have the chance to instill that same love of reading that I had. That passion that helped me over come some of the most difficult obstacles in my life. I graduated in 2005 with a bachelors in Elementary Education grades 1-8.
I am a married, mother of 3 beautiful children, who are the absolute light of my life. Brody, Cason and Natalie. This is where the name BCN Love came from. They are the reason I breathe! When I am not being a mommy or teaching I am working on my side business of sewing, Personalized Vinyl items, Embroidery work and graphic designs.
