I have been a Bilingual Elementary Teacher for 20 years. I taught 3rd grade for two years and have been in 2nd grade for 18 years.
My style of teaching has always been theme and project based. I have always believed in a more holistic approach to teaching. I have found that students are more engaged and come away with a better understanding of concepts taught.
I was featured in a half page spread in a Brazilian Newspaper, The Brasiians based in New York. The exhibit, Amazonia Brasil was being held at South Street Seaport in Manhattan, New York. This exhibit was a virtual walk through the Brazilian Rainforest. Students were working on a thematic unit about Brazil so I contacted the exhibit and I was able to secure free entry for my students. As a result of this field trip we were featured in the Brasilians newspaper. We were also provided free tickets on the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) as well as the NYC subway because I teach in a low socio-economic district. This was one of the most memorable field trips and one in which I happened to get an honorable mention.
