I'm an 11 year veteran teacher with 4 years art teaching experience, and 7 years of special education in the elementary/high school settings. My recent accomplishments have been a $20,000 art grant we received for digital art in the community; Elementary students are creating art on their tablets that are projected on tv's that are purposefully placed within the community. I'm a husband, father of 2 boys that I also teach in my classroom. If I would teach my own kids using these supplies, you can trust that it will be good for you!
With Rules & Expectations in place, and reinforced; I like to give students enough structure to create, present, respond, & connect with art. In a typical 25-30 minute class period, the students walk to the instruction table, voices 0-1, away from distracting friends, listen to my 1-3 minute lesson, get supplies, and get to work. They have well organized materials, so that they are not limited/bound to certain mediums and and create freely. 2-6th Grade; We end class by having students put folders/work away, pick up supplies, and empty the trash. 1] Each unit I plan has a day of experimentation, giving students a time that in not interfered with & a time to produce quality questions. 2] Next, I teach them an element/principle of design, paired with a medium/techniques. 3] We explore an example/non-example of a project we are pursuing, and explore any artists that I connected to the project. 4] We create a draft to 3 drafts prior to our final project to prevent using up our best materials. 5] They get 1-4 art classes to complete the project, and self-reflect on the project. 6] Students present to their class, and call upon 1-2 classmates, of their choosing, to hear something positive about their project. 7] Students put their art in the location chosen for the project. 8] Art Shows are planned, and shared with the community.
