MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

After completing a Bachelor of Music degree at Queen's University Belfast, Allan pursued a specialised 2-year postgraduate teaching programme at the Metropolitan University and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. This comprehensive course encompassed traditional elements of a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) while also focusing on specialised teaching methods such as Dalcroze Eurhythmics and the Kodaly Method. As a principal study cellist, Allan also trained at the RNCM and taught on the RNCM’s ground-breaking ‘Junior Strings Project’.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Upon completion of his studies, Allan was offered the position of 'Head of Junior Music and Head of Strings' at one of the leading British international schools in Rome. During his 11 years in Rome, Allan worked with children of various ages but gravitated towards the younger end of the spectrum, focusing primarily on nursery to 11-year-old students. It was during this time that Allan was first met the idea of teaching rhythmic patterns using animal names. Observing the profound impact it had on his students' musical progress, Allan was inspired to expand and develop this concept into his primary music curriculum. In the summer of 2011, Allan relocated to London to become Director of Music in a central London prep school. In the years that followed, Allan developed and refined the programme and after completing the initial draft, "AnimaRhythm" was piloted in a range of primary music settings in both the UK and abroad. Encouraged by the programme's early success and positive feedback, AnimaRhythm transitioned to an online platform, offering not only a comprehensive primary music program but also training for specialist and non-specialist music teachers. Allan continues to teach part-time in an infant school in central London, allowing him time to focus on further developing AnimaRhythm and assisting other schools in delivering their music programmes. Allan is also pursuing a Master of Music Education degree at the Royal College of Music to further enhance his knowledge and expertise in the field.
