TEACHING EXPERIENCE

As someone who learned English as a second language, I am intimately familiar with the linguistic and academic processes that are necessary to maximize language acquisition. Learning English in an educational context inspired me to major in English language teaching in college. While being trained as an ESL teacher at Centro Universitario Ibero-Americano in Sao Paulo, Brazil, I also worked in an English school where I was able to teach ESL classes to a wide range of students (from children to adults). After graduating, I was hired as an elementary teacher in an English language school. This experience gave me the opportunity to teach English across multiple content areas through a sheltered content English immersion approach. During my time as an elementary English language teacher, I also continued teaching private ESL courses to adolescents and adults. In 2009, I moved to the US to pursue my Master’s degree in Bilingual/ESL Education at Washington State University. In addition to my graduate level coursework, I have endorsements from the Washington State OSPI in ELL, English Language Arts, and K-8 Elementary Education. I have had three years of professional experience as a teacher in bilingual/ELL classrooms in the Pasco School District. Over the past three years, I have worked as a para-educator in an ESL classroom at Ochoa Middle School (6 months), as a 7th and 8th grade bilingual language arts teacher at Ochoa Middle School (2 years), and my current position as a 4th grade teacher with multiple ELL students at Maya Angelou Elementary School. Furthermore, as a bilingual teacher for the Pasco School District, I have received extensive professional development training in GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) methods, as well as ESL approaches to Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop techniques. Another important component to my development as an ESL trainer involves my leadership experiences in various language minority education workshops. Among the most significant events, I was a session presenter at the Pasco School District’s Bilingual Education Conference (February & August, 2012), and I was a participant on the Washington State OSPI Comprehensive Literacy Plan development team for issues concerning ESL students (July 2012).
