TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have always had a strong passion for teaching. With experience working at both the primary and intermediate grades in elementary, as well as in activities outside of the traditional classroom, I have a diverse background in teaching. Currently, I am in my 7th year of teaching 5th grade.

MY TEACHING STYLE

- I believe students must do more than just listen. They need to be writing, reading, discussing, and engaging in solving problems. Basically, students need to be actively involved, and engaged in higher-order thinking tasks. Active learning benefits students in many ways and should be done daily. - I try to be a teacher leader, which is someone who takes risks and tries new things in order to increase student achievement. Teacher-leaders are also teachers who exhibit best practices in teaching. They know that their education and learning did not stop after college, but rather being an effective teacher requires a commitment to learning. These teachers strive to have better subject knowledge and the best educational practices. - I learned quickly how imperative it is to meet the needs of an array of learners in a mixed-ability classroom. Instead of a curriculum centered, teacher directed, passive approach, it is more beneficial for students to have the classroom be person-centered, self-directed, and active. Along the same lines, it is important to make learning engaging and challenging for all learners based on their needs, interest, and learning styles. - To be a successful teacher, I believe it is important to learn about my students' learning styles, collect data, and differentiate by the content, process, and product. Therefore, I use authentic assessment. I believe students should be assessed by performing real-life engaging tasks which demonstrate application of their knowledge and skills. Students should be assessed with a mix of traditional assessments and authentic assessments. I learned authentic assessment offer more student choice and are more student-structured than teacher-structured.
