What educators are saying

I created anchor charts with my students based off the first few pages and used the rest of the resources as a pacing guide. My students were engaged and took the information in easily. Very user and student friendly resource!
Literary essay writing is a hard concept for third graders to grasp. This resource helped to make it clearer for my students

Description

Help your students learn how to write a short literary essay as part of Writers’ Workshop.

This unit provides step by step practice for 3rd graders when learning to write claims based on short original and adapted stories. Following a step by step process, they organize the evidence which proves their thesis. They use this information from the graphic organizer to write paragraphs which include the thesis, evidence that proves the thesis, explanation of how the evidence proves the thesis and a conclusion.

Using graphic organizers and writing frames helps students when they begin trying to organize their thinking. It also helps them remember the process when writing additional essays. There are several stories provided to give them practice with this process.

Although based on 3rd grade standards, this unit would also provide review for 4th grade writers. It could also help 2nd graders as they learn to write paragraphs.
