Description

This product includes a viewing guide for the documentary The Cats of Mirikitani and an internment sketch assignment that guides students through an analysis of the physical, emotional, and psychological impact of the Japanese internment camps in Chapter 3 of When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka. It is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for grades 9-12.

Students will:

  • View and take notes on the documentary using a graphic organizer.
  • Respond to post-viewing reflection and discussion questions about the film and its connection to the text.
  • Learn about the Art of Gaman and how Japanese American artists such as Jimmy Mirikitani and Mine Okubo processed their memories of the internment camps through art.
  • Create an internment sketch that demonstrates their close-reading and analysis of a scene from Chapter 3 of When the Emperor Was Divine.
