WRITING BUNDLE: Personal Narrative, Writing Prompt, Poem

These are the writing pieces I use with my eighth grade students to prepare them for the writing SOL. This writing program has worked well for my students for 13 years. For the last three years, over 60 percent of my students have earned pass advance on their Writing SOL. The key to doing well lies in modeling good writing and in the EDITING strategies. My students edit for specific words, descriptive words, figurative language, sound device, compound sentences, and complex sentences. This bundle includes instruction and activities to support these editing strategies. I have personally had great success with these units. I included my fall poem unit because I always start with this. It focuses on using imagery and word choice. Then the next big writing assignment we do is personal narrative to teach students to share the details of a specific memory that they have. Then we write about our best gift as a persuasive writing prompt. All of these pieces work together to improve and teach very specific writing skills. This will make writing in your classroom more fun and structured. The instructional slides are ready to go. You just walk them through it and monitor their progress. I run off all handouts before we begin and have the students put them in their writing section of their binders.
