Unit 4 - Kindness and Friendship (from the Kindness Classroom: A Social Emotional Yearlong Curriculum)
This SEL curriculum program focuses on kindness, friendships and empathy in the primary grades. It has everything you need to create a Kind Classroom!
The goal of these units are to provide easy-to-use lessons and resources to help teachers introduce students to the concept of kindness - what it looks like in the classroom, in families, and in their community.
This unit is packed with many different engaging, community-building activities give students the exposure and practice ESSENTIAL social skills needed to create a successful classroom environment.
♦ Please note: This is unit 4 of the full year SEL Kindness Classroom unit, which is a comprehensive Social/Emotional Learning curriculum for the ENTIRE YEAR (40 lessons - 200+ activities). See below for details.
♥ What’s included in UNIT 4: Kindness and Friendship
→ Storybook : Little Penguin’s Kindness Contest: Each unit has it’s own storybook with the same central characters. This way students can refer back to the story and events as their explore the concepts. In this story, a little penguin and his friend Panda have a contest to see how many people they can be kind to. They discover that acts of kindness make themselves feel happy, too! In the end, Little Penguin writes in his diary to review what he learned about the nature of kindness. This book can be shared as a projected ebook, or printed to add to your classroom library.
→ There are five VISUAL lesson plans included which will walk you through each lesson topic making it very easy to implement. This means there are images of the finished product or resource needed so you will stay organized. This makes planning quick and easy! Each of the five lessons has several different activities (usually 5-7), and includes a TEACHER SCRIPT read aloud - to help guide your lesson. This saves teachers valuable time and lets them focus on the conversation, concepts, and ideas of their students during these valuable discussions.
About The Lessons
As mentioned above, each of the 5 lessons has five or more different activities. The lesson map has both a description of the activity, and picture of the activity or finished result. Group discussions for all 5 lessons include a teacher script to guide the conversation, with question and possible answers included.
After completing the 25+ activities in the unit, students will learn to:
♦ use kind words in the classroom, participate in friendship circles and other community building activities.
♦ understand that their words and actions affect others, and ultimately themselves in terms of friendships made or lost.
♦ participate in kindness activities that extend outside the classroom to other students and teachers in the school community.
♦ explore ways to spread kindness at home with take-home projects, including random acts of kindness projects.

Why Teach Kindness and Empathy?
Friendship and kindness lessons are especially helpful in the classroom where we are building a community of students who must learn to work well together. In order to have successful relationships, we have to be able to feel and show empathy and understanding to others.
In the first 3 units of the Kindness Classroom we have learned to recognize emotions in ourselves and others, as well as how to use self-calming strategies. This self-awareness will be an essential tool in developing empathy towards others. This unit has many specific suggestions and class activities that allow students to experience the feeling of helping others and being supported by friendships.
