FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Question: What are the goals of the program?
Answer: The goal of this program is to assist teachers in providing comprehensive social/emotional instruction that will lead to positive social behaviours and interactions, with fewer conflicts and emotional problems.
Question: What are some of the unique features of this curriculum?
Answer: This program has many unique features!
★ Each lesson contains a VISUAL lesson plan, with images of the materials used.
★ Each lesson has a TEACHER SCRIPT to assist you in introducing concepts to students.
★ Each unit contains an original STORY from a series based on a little penguin’s journey through social development. These books can be printed and added to your permanent class library or shown to the class digitally by projecting the pages.
★ Writing and art activities can be kept in a Kindness Scrapbook to refer to through the year.
Question: Do I have to purchase story books in order to complete this program?
Answer: No. There are eight 14-page stories included in the program that you can share with your class digitally, or you can print them out as a regular book to add to your classroom library. There are also several partner plays based on the same characters throughout the series. I have included lists of and links to other storybooks as well, if you are looking to purchase other supporting literature.
Question: Does each unit have a story included?
Answer: Yes, each new unit begins with a story in the Little Penguin series that introduces the concept. Often children find ideas easier to grasp when it’s through the lens of a character they know. These books can be added to your classroom library, or simply read aloud as an ebook.
Question: How do the teacher scripts work?
Answer: Just print out and read to your students! Each group lesson has a teacher script included, with helpful questions and possible answers embedded. This helps teachers get started with a discussion through example, saving planning time.
Question: What kind of activities are in each unit?
Answer: Each unit has 5 lessons, each of which has 5 or more activities to complete. There are a diverse set of activities: whole group and hands-on partner work. For example: partner plays and role playing, journals, sorting, reading response cards, art projects, anchor charts, scenario cards, write and wipe card centers, comics, flip books, game boards, and more.
Question: How long will each lesson take?
Answer: These lessons are packed with activities, so the answer varies. Each of the five lessons within a unit has between 5 and 7 different activities, discussions, class projects, small group work, or partner activities. Depending on the age and ability of your students, each single lesson could take two or three periods to complete. This is a very flexible program where you can pick and choose what is most appropriate for your students, and which can be adapted to full hour-long lessons, or short periods through the week.
Question: How much teacher prep is involved?
Answer: These activities are meant to be easy to integrate into your classroom. There is no prep needed for the scripted lessons, and most other materials are printable to distribute, or laminate for multiple use. Even the anchor charts have pre-made examples and images to a print and glue onto chart paper. If you choose to print the 8 storybooks, they can be bound or stapled, however you can also just project them on the computer to read to your class with no other prep needed. There are no other books to purchase. Many of the posters, books, partner plays and activities can be shared by projecting the pages of the PDF file, if you choose not to print.
Question: How is finished work organized?
Answer: All of the art and writing projects can be stored in a year long Kindness Scrapbook, and these are fantastic to share during teacher conferences to discuss student progress in SEL areas. (Scrapbook covers provided in Unit 1). Alternatively, you may send work home or use a different kind of portfolio.
